Hello everyone:
I am a retired art teacher just starting in stone
sculpture. I just joined the group and enjoy reading
the threads. I have read most of the sculpture books in
our local library. Of course they are informative, but
I have a few questions that didn't get answered, can you
believe it?
First: Are sandstone boulders found on a lakeshore in
western Kentucky suitable for carvin Has exposure to
water and the elements made them unusable for sculpture?
Second: Is sandstone a suitable material for sculpture.
I have been pecking away at one and like the way it
works and looks, but can't help wondering if I am
wasting my time on such a soft material.
Third: I live fairly close to the Indiana limestone
beds, is the limestone here in Kentucky (100 miles
south) the same as Indiana limestone? Ours is crushed
and used for paving and rip rap. Would these larger
pieces be OK for carving or has the crusher ruined them?
I would appreciate any thoughts you may have on these
matters.
