I'm a novice to stone carving, originally from the UK
but I live in The Netherlands. I started out on
soapstone several years ago and am feeling my way
through serpentine, marl, limestone and alabaster to
some of the harder stuff eventually. It will probably
never be more than a hobby, but I'm still pretty
passionate about stone.

There's so much to learn, but I still enjoy every minute
of my encounters with stone. I signed up on this list
more than a year ago, when it was still fairly quiet,
but I seem to have been struck from the list for some
reason unknown to me (and not mentioned on the
instructions FAQ). I hope it doesn't happen again,
since traffic seems to be increasing on the list.

I have little to offer the seasoned carvers and
sculptors out there, but I appreciate the chance to hear
your ideas and suggestions. Also, since I've been
learning in Holland, my stone vocabulary is Dutch, so
it's intriguing trying to work out the English
equivalents from the messages.

Unlikely question: does anyone know where I might get
hold of some alabaster in Southern Spain? I'd like to
bring a (small) piece back with me when I visit someone
in Andalucia soon.

thank you
Katie de Haan
