view Collateral Damage by John H. St.John
It is interesting that the decorated Gulf war veteran, Timothy McVeigh, used the same expression as his general Norman Schwartzkopf : "collateral damage", in justifying the slaughter of civilians. It is an interesting euphemism that could well have been used by Dr. Goebbels. Killing civilians has become an accepted part of modern war. This was illustrated by the decorated Senator Kerry who did not die from lethal injection. What caused Timothy McVeigh to declare war on his own government? According to Von Clauswitz: "War is an extension of politics". When a disaffected population loses the possibility of political protest; it is quite understandable that they will turn to open war. If they adopt the rules of war they were taught by their own government, their actions are condemned as wanton murders. This is not an excuse for Timothy McVeigh, but if we do not learn from his seemingly irrational action, it is more than likely that it will happen again. The tight control over information in the United States by the corporations is a thing of the past. The Internet has changed that. Criminal actions by what has become a criminal government are no longer swept under the rug. A population that has become deliberately brutalized by a corrupt corporate culture is liable to contain individuals who will turn against it using its own methods. It is easy to see that Timothy McVeigh is such a creature, and it is reasonable to suppose that there are many others like him. Without a democracy, and without a population that can legitimately protest by using the ballot, we can expect uprisings . . . not only by individuals, but by elements in society that were formerly staunch members of the upper middle class. The California energy crisis is such an example. The oligarchy of energy corporations and their government dog robbers is eventually going to find itself "collateral damage."
