Sharon 'to agree Palestinian
state'
17oct01
ISRAEL is to propose a peace plan to the United States that agrees to an eventual independent Palestinian state, it has been reported.
The claim is made in the Foreign Report publication from the respected Jane's defence analysis group.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is to put the plan to US President George W Bush, the publication said, quoting unidentified sources.
It said Mr Sharon would agree to "certain withdrawals from the West Bank", a complete pull-out from the Gaza Strip and the dismantling of all settlements there.
The publication said it had learned of the development "exclusively".
It said that Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres convinced Mr Sharon to make the offer and that the prime minister agreed after finding out that Mr Bush intended to propose a Middle East plan of his own.
The United States has returned to its efforts to get the Middle East peace process back on the rails since the September 11 attacks against New York and Washington.
Those attacks
required the US government to form an international coalition to fight terrorism
which included Arab states - many of which were hesitant because of Israel's
continued occupation of Palestinian territory.
