JASENOVAC, Croatia - Relics documenting horrors=20
committed at Croatia's most infamous World War II=20
concentration camp were returned yesterday to their=20
place of origin from Washington's Holocaust Museum.=20

Shackles, letters written by camp inmates, and=20
photographs of emaciated men being forced to work or=20
being executed arrived in the central Croatian village of=
=20
                 Jasenovac.=20

Tens of thousands of Serbs, Jews, Gypsies, and=20
anti-fascist Croats perished in the Jasenovac camp=20
                 during its four-year existence - a result of Croatia's=20
                 wartime alliance with the Nazis.=20

After the war, the site was turned into a memorial and=20
the relics were exhibited here. But the exhibition was=20
dismantled in 1991 during the Serbo-Croat war, which=20
erupted when the country's minority Serbs rebelled=20
against Croatia for declaring its independence from=20
                 Yugoslavia.=20

After Croats recaptured the area in 1995, the ethnic=20
Serb curator of the memorial fled with the relics to=20
Serb-held territory in neighboring Bosnia. He later=20
handed the material over to Washington's Holocaust=20
Museum, which invested $150,000 in its preservation.=20

The museum returned the relics last week to the Croatian=
=20
ambassador in Washington, who sent them back home.=20

Recently, the Croatian government renovated the=20
museum which houses the relics, and its current curator,=
=20
Mate Rupic, plans to reopen the collection to the public=
=20
                 in April.=20

The relics reveal gruesome details of life and death in th=
e=20
camp, the largest of about 40 run by Croatia's Nazi=20
                 puppet regime.=20

Pava Molnar, who spent two years in the camp as a=20
young woman, held back tears as she watched the=20
wooden packages filled with relics arrive yesterday.=20

"It reminds me, once again, of all the people who died=20
here," Molnar, now 81, said. But she added she also is=20
"very happy" with the return of the relics. "This is where=
=20
                 they belong," she said.=20

At a modest ceremony held yesterday at the site, the US=
=20
ambassador to Croatia, Lawrence G. Rossin, said the=20
collection helps prevent the Holocaust from being=20
forgotten and serves to warn future generations to never=
=20
                 let similar evils occur again.=20

Croatia's minister of culture, Antun Vujic, said Jasenovac=
=20
remains a place of "reverence to the victims... and also a=
=20
place of warning" for future generations.=20

The exhibition includes photos of guards overseeing=20
inmates at work, a guard shooting an inmate, and dead=20
bodies left in fields and floating in a nearby river.=20

The exhibition includes a letter ordering Samuel=20
Mirschenhauser, a Jew, to Jasenovac, "to be held there=20
for three years." Ilija Lemanjic left a note saying, "Now=
=20
I've been arrested again. My crime - being a Serb."=20

There is a yellow cloth that Jews here had to wear; a=20
schoolbook left behind by a child inmate, Tedi Drausnig;=
=20
a letter - clearly censored - sent by Stevan Zivkovic to=
=20
his relatives. A guard added a line saying inmates were=
=20
allowed to send letters "as a reward for their good work=
=20
                 and behavior."=20

Angela Hrg, a Croat inmate, compiled a book of recipes=20
in January 1942 "when there was no food" in the camp,=20
"to preserve them for my children."=20

Croatia has condemned its fascist past. But its former=20
leader, Franjo Tudjman, who ruled the country until his=
=20
death in 1999, was often accused of cultivating the kind=
=20
of nationalism that harks back to World War II.=20

Some Croats still seek to diminish - or deny - the crimes=
