In addition to what Anirban said (and a web search on browser
hijacking should turn up even more reference material), go to your
ISP's website and find in their help documents the two IP addresses
that they provide you for "DNS" service.

Then go to start > Connect To > (right-click on the name of your
internet connection) > Properties > Networking > (highlight Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP)) > click Properties > General tab.

Make sure that the IP addresses shown there for "...DNS server
addresses" match the two your ISP said should be there.

These are the IP addresses that your computer relies upon to translate
domain names to IP addresses. If a hijacker manages to change your DNS
server settings, they can provide fraudulent IP translations, sending
you to websites different from the ones you thought you were going
to.

I have seen far too many reports lately in other forums from people
whose computers got hacked/infected who were using AVG.
