"I think we may have to look at providing a more visible sign of support," said Christopher Hill, a former US ambassador to Macedonia and now the US representative to Poland. Hill told lawmakers attending the NATO Parliamentary Assembly meeting here that such support would be "not so much in the application of force, but visible so that the Albanian insurgents understand they are not only up against the Macedonian army, but up against NATO as well." Hill praised the Macedonian authorities' handling of the ethnic Albanian rebels who have been clashing with army troops in the northwestern part of the country. The US diplomat said the insurgents had misinterpreted NATO support for Kosovo Albanians against former Yugoslav strongman Slobodan Milosevic, and speculated they might be more interested in smuggling than gaining more autonomy for Macedonia's ethnic Albanian minority. More than 200 lawmakers from 19 NATO countries and 16 other countries were attending the five-day meeting in Vilnius, set to end Thursday. The assembly is due to consider a declaration on southeastern Europe, the draft of which expresses "grave concern" at "recurrent outbursts of violence" in the region. The draft declaration urges all parties in the conflict to negotiate in good faith. http://www.inq7.net/wnw/2001/may/30/wnw_3-1.htm Miroslav Antic, http://www.antic.org/ ______________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
