EFE NEWS [Spain] -- Monday, 28 May 2001 Army frees four guerrilla-held towns, 110 killed 2. RCN RADIO [Colombia] -- Martes 29 de mayo de 2001 Desbloqueadas cuatro poblaciones de Narino ________________________________________________________________ **************************************************************** NOTE: The Colombian military is claiming to have killed more than 110 people near the Ecuadorian border, in "Operation Tsunami." Only 18 of the dead are alleged to have been guerrillas, while they count 98 "workers in coca fields and cocaine processing laboratories" dead. Given the history of the Colombian military and its status as the worst violator of human rights in the Western hemisphere, one has to point out that this has the makings of a classic case of a massacre. It really sounds like 98 peasants were executed. The information indicates that there were no wounded and no captured survivors. This is a clear sign of mass execution more than anything. Information is hard to get out at this point. It will probably be a few days before more reliable sources are able to confirm the reports. -DG ________________________________________________________________ **************************************************************** * 1 * EFE NEWS [Spain] Monday, 28 May 2001 Army frees four guerrilla-held towns, 110 killed ------------------------------ BOGOTA -- More than 110 people were killed, most of them believed to be involved with drug trafficking, in a Colombian military operation to liberate four southwestern towns held by FARC guerrillas, military officials said Monday. Rebels with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) had blockaded the four towns near the Ecuadorian border and prevented residents from either leaving or entering, army commander Gen. Hector Horacio Ruiz said. "Once again this territory has regained its freedom," Ruiz said, adding that anti-drug officials are investigating reported links between the region's cocaine producers and Brazilian drug traffickers. According to the army, 18 guerrillas and 98 workers in coca fields and cocaine processing laboratories were killed in the fighting. In the same region near Colombia's main Pacific port of Tumaco, anti-narcotics forces also discovered 20,000 hectares (49,382 acres) of coca fields and 5,000 hectares (12,345 acres) of poppy fields. Some 2,500 members of the army, navy and air force took part in "Operation Tsunami." Also on Monday, Colombian anti-drug police said they had dismantled 68 cocaine laboratories and seized more than 25 tons of coca paste and other materials used to produce the drug in another operation near the Venezuelan border.
