Yugoslavia widens charges against Milosevic
Serbia's Interior Minister has accused the imprisoned
former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic of
playing a defining role in organised crime.
The accusation comes as Yugoslavia prepares to put the
former leader on trial.
The UN and NATO would like to see former president
Milosevic face an international court in the
Netherlands, but Yugoslavia is set to try him in
Belgrade.
Initially, this is meant to be on corruption charges -
siphoning off state money - but Prime Minister
Djindjic said yesterday that war crimes charges over
Kosovo could be added.
Now Interior Minister Dusan Mihajlovic has added to
the list - Yugoslavia's senior law enforcement officer
says that Mr Milosevic played a determining role in
the organisation of the country's mafia, allowing
organised crime to work itself deep into the fabric of
society and partly finance his regime.
The new accusations may not see the international
community any closer to getting the former president
in front of the international criminal tribunal, but
they do suggest an even more more intense focus in
Belgrade on the Milosevic regime and its alleged
misdeeds.
