A commission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has carried out a complex research into depleted uranium's effect on the environment in Yugoslavia and concluded that it poses no threat for the people if taken separately, Lieutenant-General Boris Alexeyev, environment security chief in the Russian Armed Forces, told reporters. However NATO bombings caused destruction and fires at many installations of chemical and pharmaceutical industry, and depleted uranium's combinations with products that emerged out of the ruins were indeed dangerous, he claimed. Laboratories extracted many dangerous substances and 36 of them are lethal for animals and 11 for the people. For instance, they may cause leukemia, Alexeyev stressed.
