Some 1,500 Rebels Staying in Georgia's Pankisi Gorge, Says Federal Headquarters KHANKALA, Jun 11, 2001 -- (Military News Agency) Intelligence reports obtained by the unified federal headquarters confirm that about 1,500 Chechen rebels are staying in the Duisi village and other localities of Georgia's Pankisi gorge, a spokesman for the headquarters said on Saturday. Some rebels form part of the so-called Islamic Guard under command of Abdulmalik Medzhidov, native of the Duba-Yurt village, Grozny rural district, the spokesman told the Military News Agency. Besides, among the guerrillas are local residents of Chechen nationality, as well as natives of Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan and Arab nations. Rebel groups are armed with several air defense systems, portable surface-to-air missile systems, mortars, sniper arms and satellite navigation systems. According to the spokesman, guerrillas are undergoing training in a camp 2 kilometers north-west of Duisi. They master mountain warfare tactics and study routes across the Georgia-Russia border.
