The illusion wasn't - couldn't have been - lost on anyone, and was a clear warm-up exercise for the all-out assault on Yugoslavia three months later. June 12, 2001 Chirac Decorates Rommel's Son FREIBURG, Germany (AP) -- French President Jacques Chirac on Tuesday decorated Manfred Rommel, the son of a famed Nazi commander, praising him as a ''friend of France.'' Rommel, 72, was made a commander of the French Legion of Honor at a ceremony on the sidelines of a German-French summit in the southern German town of Freiburg. He served as the German Foreign Ministry's coordinator for relations between the two countries under former Chancellor Helmut Kohl. Chirac said Rommel, who was also the mayor of nearby Stuttgart for 22 years, was honored for his contribution to ''anchoring Franco-German friendship in the lives of our fellow citizens.'' Rommel's father, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, was a World War II commander under Hitler whose North African victories earned him the nickname ''The Desert Fox.'' When the war turned against Germany, Rommel refused to fight to the last man and fell out with Hitler. Rommel committed suicide in 1944. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo!
