"We have become more self-confident, we are not directly threatened by anyone, and we have consolidated our international position to the extent that we feel safe," Drnovsek told national television in an interview late Monday, quoted by STA. He added that he told U.S. President George W. Bush in Ljubljana on Saturday that it did not make a big difference if Slovenia became a NATO member a year earlier or later. Bush, whom Drnovsek met on the margins of Ljubljana summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, was somewhat surprised since he expected the Slovenian leadership to show more eagerness, STA added. Drnovsek also told Bush that Slovenia was already reassured in 1997, when it was not invited to join NATO in Madrid, by former U.S. president Bill Clinton and French President Jacques Chirac that it will be admitted in 1999 which did not happen. Since then, the leadership has become skeptical and is showing caution. Slovenia, which is also a frontrunner for EU entry, is expected to be invited to join NATO at an Alliance summit in Prague in 2002.
