Why, in the richest country in the world, is medical care a luxury, why are schools in disarray and prisons full and overflowing? What are the social and economic forces that fuel racism and white supremacy worldwide? Why are we experiencing an intensifying militarization both at home and abroad? Marx's approach to participating in social change means that we think before we act, but learn to think by doing. Analysis is essential to our political resistance in the streets. With today's global economy as our starting point, we will look at the elements of marxist theory from Das Capital, to the historical method, to issues of science and technology, to society and culture. We will examine some of the basic works of Karl Marx and Frederick Engels as well as some of the more recent theorists of social change--from the work of Antonio Gramsci on developing a revolutionary movement in the face of Italian facism to the lessons of Malcolm X on the obstacles posed by racism in the United States and around the world.
