Iraq, Libya Protest Milosevic's Handover

BAGHDAD, Jul 2, 2001 -- (dpa) Iraq Monday "condemned"
the extradition of former Yugoslav president Slobodan
Milosevic for trial at The Hague.

Libya was also highly critical of Serbia's handover of
Milosevic Thursday to an international war crimes
tribunal, which the Libyan government said was in
return for "a handful of dollars".

The Iraqi satellite channel Monday quoted a spokesman
for Iraq's foreign ministry as condemning
"opportunist" behavior by the Serbian government.

"As an independent state being proud of its
independence, the republic of Iraq condemns this
opportunist and paid-for act contravening the rules of
international law the government of Serbia has
undertaken," said the Iraqi spokesman. "This is meant
to use the so-called international criminal courts as
being an easy tool in the hands of America and the
imperialistic West to impose double standards and
selective criteria on the world.

"And this takes place at a time when the real war
criminals led by (Israeli Prime Minister Ariel)
Sharon, killer of women and children at Sabra and
Chatilla, are let loose to commit more crimes of
genocide against the heroic Palestinian people."

The Libyan satellite channel cited press reports of
U.S. and other Western donor nations promising
billions in aid to Yugoslavia on Friday, immediately
following Milosevic's extradition.

"This constitutes a serious juncture for intervention
in the internal affairs of the (Yugoslav) state," the
Libyan broadcast said. "And several legal
establishments have emphasized the necessity of
bringing to trial the terrorists who intentionally
attempted to kill humanity such as Sharon and (former
U.S. president Ronald) Reagan."
