Preliminary Approval Given To Ban 38 Ethnic Albanians >From Entering EU Countries VOA News 16 Jul 2001 19:53 UTC Javier Solana [Mug shot] European Union foreign ministers have given preliminary approval to a list of 38 ethnic Albanians linked to the fighting in Macedonia who will be barred from entering EU countries. Officials in Brussels say the ban is to go into effect when EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana decides the time is right for the action. They did not release any of the names of the individuals involved but said most are leaders of or have close ties to the National Liberation Army, the ethnic Albanian group that has been fighting government forces in Macedonia since February. The ministers also approved plans to provide about $270 million in loans to Yugoslavia to help that country meet a budget shortfall. The assistance is part of the $1.25 billion in economic aid promised at a donors' conference in Brussels last month.
