Adviser Gunned Down DUSHANBE, Tajikistan (AP) -- A state adviser to the Tajik president was gunned down in broad daylight in the capital Dushanbe on Tuesday by three young men using pistols with silencers, officials said. Karim Yuldashev, 60, who had served as President Emomali Rakhmonov's foreign affairs adviser since 1992, was shot as he was leaving his home. Witnesses heard Yuldashev scream and saw the attackers running away, said Amirkul Azimov, secretary of Tajikistan's Security Council, who described the killing as a ''terrorist act.'' Yuldashev died of two gunshot wounds to the chest and one to the head 15 minutes after arriving at a hospital, he added. Tajikistan, an impoverished former Soviet republic in Central Asia, has been plagued by violence since the 1991 Soviet collapse, including a five-year civil war between a hard-line government and a mostly Islamic opposition that ended in a shaky truce. The country's border with Afghanistan, guarded jointly by Tajik and Russian forces, is vulnerable to incursions by Islamic militants as well as drug and weapon smugglers and is a frequent site of clashes.
