[Bar, the site of the oil spill mentioned in the article below, is 10 minutes
away from the little seaside town my grandmother lives in. It is also the
future site of American and NATO naval installations if the puppet regime in
Podgorica ever secures this Republics independence from Yugoslavia. I
imagine all the drinking water in the region will be contaminated in the
coming days, with disastrous effects for human health. These "accidents"
have steadilly been increasing since environmental laws have been
progressively deregulated by the "pro-Western" Djukanovic regime. The lax
environmental laws are making a mockery of the SNP's (former socialist
governments attempt) to run Montenegro as an "Ecological State", where all
legislation was to be mediated in light of ecological concerns. Although
Djukanovic has kept the label "Ecological State of Montenegro" he has
repealed many of the provisions that would have protected the regions
pristine beaches, clear streams and beautiful mountain flora and fauna. A
few month's ago a tanker departing from Britain to Montenegro crashed and
spilled oil in the seas around France or Britain triggering some media
coverage. Reports of nuclear waste being sent to Montenegro have also been
rife, although I've never actually seen confirmation of these in "official"
press reports. Nonetheless, one thing is clear, if something isn't done soon
Montenegro's biggest commodity - its natural beauty, which is a huge source
of tourism - will be no more...]

Storm causes oil spill in Adriatic port of Bar

PODGORICA, Yugoslavia, July 18 (Reuters) - Storm winds caused 150 tonnes of
oil to spill from a tanker into the Adriatic Sea off the port of Bar in
Montenegro, a port official said on Wednesday.

Technical Director Predrag Rajkovic said a sudden storm on Tuesday morning
severed a link between the tanker and coastal facilities of Montenegro's oil
company Jugopetrol, causing the spill.

"Around eight o'clock on Tuesday morning, strong wind tore links and the
by-pass between the tanker Bonias Star and Jugopetrol's oil terminal while
oil was being pumped into the facilities," Rajkovic told Reuters.

The ship, sailing under the Maltese flag, became separated from the coastal
installation, allowing the oil to spill, he added.

Rajkovic said some 150 tonnes of oil poured into the sea.

The port used all available means to clean up the oil and Rajkovic said only
three small oil spots remained.

"We have managed to prevent an ecological catastrophe as we stopped oil from
spilling outside the port area," he said.
