I decided to give up on using the old pccard controler and now have it working nicely backing up from my ZFS filesystem to exabyte with a SCSI controller on a desktop X86 PC's PCI bus:

I've learned something and it's no great loss that OpenSolaris doesn't support every vintage 1990 laptop accessory. I'm actually surprise drivers for this 16 bit PCMCIA card are still in modern linux distributions.
