I would predict this has more to do with the disk driver (SD), than iSCSI. x86 and Sparc SD both use a different sun vtoc and if I remember right they way the values for these were generated was slightly different. Maybe one of the SD experts can chime in here and correct me.
Anyway...Couldn't you just use format -> type -> auto config to set the geometry. This option should be used with all raid type devices. You should really only set hand geometries these days for very old disks or to workaround bugs.
