This is slightly an aside but mpxio should let you add paths on the fly. 
You could ....

    * Deport the pool
    * Enable mpxio (Most people use stmsboot)
    * Reboot
    * Import the pool
    * Start your test
    * Monitor with a varient of iostat including the "-X" flag
    * Plugin the new cable or path
    * "cfgadm -c configure" the new controller
    * See if the i/o goes up and the new path is used
