Emulex has been working on a COMSTAR driver for some time now. I
expect the work to be done before the end of this quarter but cannot
say that for sure. I know they have most of the functionality working
already.

For now it is not possible but that might change in future. The
qlogic target mode driver is different from qlogic initiator mode
driver. Switching drivers without a reboot doesn't always work well.
The best way to do this is to use the same driver for both initiator
and target mode. That is a possibility (and I dont know how Emulex is
going to layout their drivers) but nothing is being done in that
direction for now.

We need to do formal benchmarks in near future. I did some basic
performance testing a while ago but the code has changed somewhat
since then. On a thumper I was able to get line rate (407 MB/sec) on
the READ side with 1 LUN to 128 LUNs (raidz zvols) with only 32K
blocksize and less than 20% CPU utilization. On WRITE side the HBA
would give 360 MB/sec to a regular file on the root disk but with
zvols it was not constant. Also the CPU utilization would vary
significantly. Hopefully we will have formal results next quarter.
