Many thanks.  Here's what happens:

bash-3.2# svcs -a | grep smb
offline        17:36:42 svc:/network/smb/server:default
bash-3.2# svcadm enable smb/server
bash-3.2# svcs -a | grep smb
offline        17:36:42 svc:/network/smb/server:default
bash-3.2# 

I guess that the second 'offline' isn't good ...
