Tim, CIFS server comes up in workgroup mode by default. In this mode you can use your local users to access CIFS shares. Here is what you need to do:
Add the following line at the end of /etc/pam.conf other password required pam_smb_passwd.so.1 nowarn use passwd(1) with any of local users you want to use for accessing CIFS share. You'll need to do this in order to generate CIFS understandable encrypted version of the user's password. After using passwd, you can do "cat /var/smb/smbpasswd" to make sure a password has been generated. Please use storage-discuss mailing list for your CIFS related questions.
