It's a nasty series of bugs that apparently have been lingering around since 
1993, and were never completely fixed. Nowdays they are obscure bugs, and if 
you look into bugs.opensolaris.org, for most of them there is no fix, on 
SunSolve there is no patch, etcetera, etcetera.
Some, but only some, were fixed in certain Nevada releases. But woe to the one 
not using Nevada!

Apparently these bugs, even though they make certain scenarios with certain 
types of storage unusable, aren't considered important enough to be fixed (some 
bugs are from 2005, and still no fix).  To understand the whole story, one only 
need follow the "related bugs" trail from 6446146.
