No, if I understand you correctly. devmapper creates a virtual block
devices, which redirect
IO to one or more physical devices.
That feature can be helpful if you need to access a foreign device
formatted, say, under
Linux with ext3 on top of LVM volume.

I would imagine some management daemon would need to monitor removable media
and perform appropriate action on hot insertion/removal.

As far as I understand the situation the devmapper should be orthogonal
to the actual physical devices, whether they are FC disks or flash media
