Someone mentioned to me (offline) about project Honeycomb. Having dug just a tad deeper, it seems that there are similar features (to what I was alluding to) in that project. It looks like much of what I was thinking was much smaller in scope than what projects like DTrace and honeycomb are trying to solve -- "cloud storage" if you will. And that kind of storage would ostensibly have the indexing need to help locate content or objects in the cloud across disperse storage systems.
