One of our goals was to minimize POSIX impact. There may be consequences to enabling/choosing certain configuration options but I don't think that should indicate that POSIX no longer applies. > That cannot mean that we can't make the system usable. True but, when there are options, it is important to choose one that is appropriate to your requirements. If you choose an inappropriate option, making symptomatic changes to compensate seems unlikely to lead to a favorable end result. So, for example, your idea for the addition of a rename(1) command as a general solution is fine but I wouldn't support a change to mv(1) on the basis being discussed because, by definition, mv(1) should not proceed when the source and target represent the same file.
