Neither. I switched the cables around so that c3d1 (disk #2) became c4d1 (disk #4), etc.
I tested all drives with the Hitachi tool and they all came out OK. So i destroyed the pool (zpool destroy) and re-created (zpool create jade raidz c3d0 c3d1 c4d0 c4d1) and all is so far just fine.
