I'm not sure if I'm parsing this correctly.
If the problem followed the files (i.e. the original folder no
longer exhibits the problem and the destination now has the
problem) then, yes, the invalid characters were the root cause
of the problem.
This is being tracked by 6564083 (Need to handle POSIX characters
that are not legal on CIFS).
