After having problems with error handling on the mv8 cards and a flaky
supermicro motherboard, I've started using the ASUS P5BV/SAS
motherboard, which uses the same LSI 1068 chip that's on the L8i.  It
only supports 8 drives on the SAS controller, but it works quite well.
I assume the L8i would work for additional drive capacity, but a
variation on it (the L4i) that I tried seemed to have a backwards
bracket or something and wouldn't fit in a couple of different cases I
tried.  Haven't needed to pursue that more however.
