After having problems with error handling on the mv8 cards and a flaky supermicro motherboard, I've started using the ASUS P5BV/SAS motherboard, which uses the same LSI 1068 chip that's on the L8i. It only supports 8 drives on the SAS controller, but it works quite well. I assume the L8i would work for additional drive capacity, but a variation on it (the L4i) that I tried seemed to have a backwards bracket or something and wouldn't fit in a couple of different cases I tried. Haven't needed to pursue that more however.
