other (namely 3ware) cards, nothing out there is better supported, more widely deployed, or more reliable than the LSI MegaRAID controllers.
With regard to Linux, they provide custom versions for a few specific distributions of Linux and those are the only ones they support. So they do not support the driver they provide to the mainline kernel, which makes no sense to me.

For an LSI card, this may not be easy, for there is no obvious way to know which one is current. The website has sometimes has multiple versions that seem to have been developed independently of one another. For example, for the 8704ELP card, there is a 9.1.1-0013 firmware package, but it's missing bug fixes that were supplied in the 9.0.1-0042 package.
