>1st - Is it recommended that my ZPOOL (RAIDZ with 4x250GB SATA drives) also >contains my OpenSolaris boot? I mean, will that work and is it optimal? >(trying to get away with least number of hard drives)
http://www.solarisinternals.com/wiki/index.php/ZFS_Best_Practices_Guide#ZFS_Root_Pool_Considerations Can't do raidz* on a root pool. Also, # of discs shouldn't be your motivating factor. Reliability and usability/manageability should be more important. Keep data off the root discs/pool. >2nd - If I have 6 drives (2x80GB IDE, 4x250GB SATA) and use both IDE drives as >mirrored boot drive and use the SATA drives for a RAIDZ file storage drive, >what happens when the motherboard takes a crap >since Im using all IDE and >SATA ports in my motherboard? can I simply change the motherboard with the >same one (since I have an exact same motherboard) and "restart" the computer >and everything will be >back as if nothing even happened? The days where IDE controllers used different geometry and you couldn't read an fs on a different computer are gone, I haven't seen that since I was a kid. Move'em and life goes on. Backups though:) >3rd - What happens if BOTH my boot drive (Mirrored) takes a crap at the >unfortunate time of, say, a holiday? How can I get the data back from my RAIDZ >pool? can I use the LiveCD? or simply install >OpenSolaris onto a spare drive >and import the pool? Anyway you want, move them or reinstall Solaris and import them etc. >Available hardware for this is an: >Intel C2D 2.66Ghz >MSI P35 NEO (1xIDE, 5xSATA, 1Gb LAN) >Nvidia 7600GS >2x80GB 7200rpm IDE Maxtor - Hopefully a ZFS Mirrored boot drive >4x250GB 7200rpm SATA2 Samsung - Hopefully a ZFS RAIDZ storage drive Don't know anything about that mobo, but I would assume if you have an option in the bios to enable AHCI versus whatever else they call non AHCI mode such as IDE|LEGACY|COMPATIBLE etc etc, you should choose AHCI.
