If you use the dsk interface then your I/O is going through the block cache and you are effectively enabling write caching on your luns -- that is the reason you see higher performance with dsk compared to rdsk. Similarly, in one of the builds (114?) since 2009.06 COMSTAR was modified to allow write caching to be enabled on a per-lun basis. That explains why 122 is capable of higher write throughput than 2009.06.
Without some form of write caching your COMSTAR write throughput is limited by the speed that the ZFS zvol interface can commit the data to disk. For that reason a flash-based separate log device will usually improve performance significantly.
