I think you could have hit a bug of earlier versions of comstar which used to 
write the first 64Kb of every storage 'provider' (zvols in your case) with 
metadata needed by comstar itself.

Latest version of comstar uses zfs properties to store that data and this, 
probably, explains why you needed to upgrade the zpool.

Maybe copying from the old target to a freshly created one skipping the first 
64Kb of the old one could solve your problem (I didn't try to do something like 
that, though, since I'm still using the 'old' iscsitgtd).
