Hello Peter I've checked the Intel data sheet for the ICH5: http://www.intel.com/assets/pdf/datasheet/252516.pdf ..and it does not seem to support AHCI mode, so OpenSolaris will only see it as an IDE drive.
BTW, for the OpenSolaris AHCI driver to attach, the controller needs to report a class-code of 010601. You can use command "prtconf -pv" to find the class-code that the sata controller is reporting. So I think you will need to upgrade the motherboard for something more modern. I would recommend that you confirm that the BIOS allows AHCI mode to be selected.
