Hello, I have had/am having the same issue. I currently have two storage servers, on the first server I have two esxi hosts connecting via iSCSI to it for virtual machines. I am replicating between the two storage servers hourly using zfs send/recv. I am then needing to back it up to tape. I am stuck at the tape as of now because I was attempting to use a file based zpool and back that to tape. However this does not work as there is a bug in zfs that corrupts the data on a reboot or something similar and comes up as UNKNOWN. So I would highly recommend not doing that. I am tinkering with the idea of creating a zpool on a zvol and backing this up to tape, however I will not get to test this solution until tomorrow. Just out of curiousity, on your esxi server how did you create the virtual machines, in physical or virtual compatibility mode? And where are you taking snapshots of the vm? from the esxi servers or from the opensolaris server?
