I'm seeing similar MPT problems here, on an 3801E (non-raid) version, but luckily my MPT "only" handles my Autoloader (HP 1/8G2 LTO-3 thing).
Same problems in FreeBSD RELENG_8 with random read/write errors at random places on tapes all accompanied by bus resets, timeouts, and whatnot. Same card+autoloader behaves flawlessly in Linux and Windows, (did a quick reinstall since this box isn't properly installed yet). Luckily my disks are on an MFI (8308ELP in raid50) so it hasn't yet "crashed the entire box".
