Hiya all,

This is my first post to this mail list so I do apologize in advance if some
of these questions have already been answered or are off topic as I don't
have the benefit of a history of reading the list.

I have found Storm to be an excellent distro that I can use in quite a
number of different situations and I find it very well suited for installs
that require a small footprint (Even with all options you only get a base
200 or so packages taking up around 350 to 400 M instead of the 600+
packages on other distros minimal installs. So any of the Storm guys reading
this keep up the good work.

I have a few points that I wanted to relay about installing on a Toshi
laptop (particularly sound config) and was hoping that some one on the list
might be able to give me some advice.

1. I like the SAS tool but some of the "essential" functions of system
config are lacking. I understand that maybe the design goals are more
towards sys admins making there own modules and the project looks quite
interesting but if it is going to sell in "user" space then some more
hardware config options are needed. My biggest bug bare would be in module
configuration and service editing. Most of the other distros have sound
config tools and I think that this would be good to include in the future.
Which brings me to my 2nd point ....

2. I tried loading my OPL3sa2 modules manually by going into
/etc/modutils/arch/i386 and adding alias and option lines for the
appropriate hardware config (values pinched from Windows and the previous
distros that I have had on the machine so I know they work), I run
update-modules and check that conf.modules contains my changes (which it
does) and restart to check that they load on reboot. They don't !!!! However
if I login to X (Gnome running Enlightenment) I get the following
interesting things happening :

        a) My sound modules load
        b) My panel does not run and logging out takes ages.

A reboot after removing the entries I added and the problem goes away. seems
that maybe ESD is having some problems somewhere but I don't know enough
about it to say where about it might be. So what am I doing wrong when I
know my values work on other Linux distros on the same hardware (and why
don't the modules load on boot up) ??? Which brings me to my third point.

3. I'm thinking of compiling my own custom kernel with support for the
specific hardware and removing the modules aspect altogether (since in this
case it only complicates the issue. If I install the storm source packages
from the CD and compile a kernel I notice that the new kernel doesn't have
the boot messages graphic displayed around it anymore (just appears as a
full screen "normal" boot messages screen. So what compile option do I need
to specify to turn this on ? (Want to keep it all pretty). I'm not talking
about the same think as the lilo graphical interface (which you turn of in
lilo.conf) but rather the graphic after you have selected your OS/Kernel
combination.

I think maybe some of the above questions are probably answered in the boxed
set doco (but I have only the download edition to go by). In the future
including the doco on the CD (weather in HTML format or as a PDF file) might
be useful.

Yeah I know doco is the last thing on a techies mind guys !!!!! (hey I am
one).

I'll be writing a How TO on my experiences as soon as I get the sound issue
sorted out (which I hope to have up sometime next week).

Well thanks all for listening/reading my rants.
