Continuing search through my archives, I find the following note from Ryan
Murray on the subject:

> Two kernel images for 2.2.14 are available via apt/dselect/stormpkg.
> kernel-image-2.2.14-1, which has no framebuffer, boot screen, or sound, and
> kernel-image-2.2.14-storm-2, which has framebuffer, boot screen, and no sound.
>
> Source for both are available as well. If you don't actually need to compile
> your own kernel for some reason, you might just want to install those
> packages. Otherwise, grab the kernel-soure-2.2.14-storm package, change
> the options you want, and compile it yourself. You can enable the sound
> here if you want to, as well.
>
> BTW: to build a debian package of your own kernel, install the kernel-package
> package, and look at the help/manpage for make-kpkg.
