Or if your system is a dedicated Linux box with no Windows ;-) You make an
incorrect assumption that everyone dual boots windows/Linux, this is a very
shaky position to stand on. While many new users do indeed dual boot as well
as some other users for different reasons, not everyone dual boots so it
doesn't matter if Lilo is installed in the MBR or not.
Also, in the case of Linux on the secondary HD, I install LILO to the second
HD's partition and use BOOTPART to modify the Windows NT boot loader (which
overwrites the MBR with it's own code not the proper code as you put it) so
that the boot menu includes the pointer to Linux. I select Linux from the
list and then get LILO from there and boot normally. works like a charm for
a dual boot NT/Linux station.
Other boot loaders also overwrite the MBR (I think Boot Magic does) and
quite frankly LILO is no different. I'm not saying you are wrong with
everything you said, in fact I agree with most of it but you do have to be
careful about absolute assumptions like you make. There are those of us who
don't want Linux and Windows on the same machine (I had to do it until I
built my own box) in which case your argument is irrelevant.
