I have a Sound Blaster LIVE!, and it was reconized upon installation.
However I can't get any sound. Is there a way to test if it installed
correctly? I did that modprobe thing, and nothing happens, it just went
to the next line.

Bottom line, spend the money and get a REAL SoundBlaster card. I have a
SB
Live! and it works great with the drivers from opensource.creative.com.
Don't scrimp on a cheap sound card that says it's SB compatible. get a
real
one for Linux.
