I'm running sockd and identd as nobody and that seemed to fix the problem.
I'm not up on SOCKS proxy myself, but it seems to work.
Thanks,

Subject: Re: [SLU] SOCKS4 and IRC help
Which Ident server are you running on your firewall machine?
The most convenient and most diplomatic way to handle this situation
is to use an ident server like oidentd that lets you "fake" your
ident responses. For example, when the IRC server sends you an
ident request, instead of having it reply with "root", you could
have it reply with "dieandburninheckyounosyscumbucket", which the
IRC server would be just fine with (well, maybe not with the length--
but you get the idea).
Another way would be to, well, not IRC as root, like the message says.
I haven't worked with SOCKS before so I don't know if it has to be
run as root, but if it DOESN'T then there's the answer to your problem
right there.
Another partial solution would be to shut down your ident server entirely,
or at least have your firewall deny incoming ident requests. However,
IRC servers that won't allow you on without an ident response are almost
as common as servers that won't let you on if your ident response is
"root", so that's not a full solution.
