KDE 2 is out in september indeed, and is very worthwile the wait imho.
put some more time in customizing it for stormix, make a stormix theme,
icons (like SuSE is doing, they even hired a kde icon designer).

Agreed..make it a choice maybe?

This is why i said to wait for xfree's release coming in june, xforce seems
to think this will be better, and they are waiting for that release before
inclusion
into debian.

KDE 2 beta compiles fine out of the box on potato, and the next beta will
compile fine
too (/me tests them)
