WinModems are not compatible with Linux at this time. Two solutions:

1) Get a real modem. External modems are good as you can use the LED's for
quick troubleshooting. But most non-winmodems will work.

2) wait until Winmodems are supported. You're going to wait a long time.

I suggest you also take a look at many of the HowTo docs available at:

There is a LOT of useful information here and should always be the first
place you go to find answers. There are others, but this is a good site for
"Newbie Qs" ;-)
