Even though I am a Linux Newbie, I am not a stupid one. The Lucent WinModem
is a WinModem only by name. It uses a Lucent Technologies chipset that
removes the software side of the WinModem, and makes it a true hardware only
56k modem.
See www.linmodems.com for more on this, and why the Lucent modem is a
linmodem.
The real piece of buffoonery is that I attempted install of the Linux
drivers for this beast, linx565a.zip, and found myself with an install
script that balked saying it was compiled for kernels 2.2.12 or 2.2.14 and I
happen to have 2.2.13 in my version of Storm (forgive me if the distro of
storm's kernel is not 2.2.* I am working from memory.
If anyone has the 2.2.14 compiled for Storm, I would greatly appreciate it,
as I am not crazy about compliing my own kernel...I think dinking around
with drivers is enough for this newbie...

no don't do it. Why encourage more of these crappy pieces of hardware in the
world. Get rid of them, burn them, blow them (the modems) up. spend some
REAL money on a REAL modem. Enough of these WINMODEM pieces of crap on the
market place.
