If it's a recompile of a newly installed kernel, there is no .config
file and the defconfig is well nigh useless. It is quite typical that a
relatively new user will choose a different selection of modules when
configuring. Ultimately, make modules_install overwrites any modules that are
the same, writes in any new ones, and leaves others as is. There is the
potential for subsequent dependency problems. Saving the old modules
with the 'mv' is a conservative, only slightly paranoid precaution.
