Hello All,
A few years ago I tried Red Hat Linux version 5.2. I was using
a home built system with an Intel 233 proc and other "off the shelf" hardware;
S3 Virge with Voodoo 1 card, SB16 clone, Zoom 33.6 hardware modem, etc. I gave
up on it because I could never get any of the hardware to work.
Along comes Maximum Linux magazine with distributions of Storm
Linux 2000 and Madrake 7.0 on CD. I decide to give it a try after reading up a
little bit and deciding that my new home built system and the newer versions of
Linux are compatible. The install goes well and LILO installs fine,
allowing me to boot either Win98 SE or Storm Linux 2000. The desktop looks
nice at 1280 x 1024 on my 21 inch monitor using a TNT2 graphics card. The
problem is, none of my other hardware works. My SB live, my old 10BT PCI
NIC, my hardware modem (USR V.90), my wheel mouse (no wheel function)...none of
it. I used my old Red Hat guide to check my com2 port and test the
modem....nothing. I use dmesg to check the boot log and all of
the hardware listed is being detected and loaded....I think....it just doesn't
work.
Here's a snip-it which I had to hand copy since my HP DeskJet
printer doesn't work under Linux:
Linux version 2.2.14-storm
Protocals: ICMP, UDP, TCP
TCP: Hashtables configured
Detected PS/2 mouse port
Serial driver version 4.27 with no serial options
enabled
ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
Sound initialization started
Sound initialization complete
PPP version 2.3.7 (demand dialing)
PPP line dicipline registered
ne.c: PCI BIOS reports Winbond 89C940 at i/o 0xe400, irq
10
*use of PCI-NE2000 driver with this card
recommended
NE*000 ethercard probe at 0xe400: 00 20 78 11 03
3d
etho:NE2000 found at 0xe400 using IRQ 10
I included these lines because they imply these peripherals
should be working, or are at least, being detected by the kernel at boot up. I
subscribed to this group to help me with some of these problems but most of the
posts here are asking about install and partitioning which I had no problems
with at all.
So here I sit, again, with Linux loaded and absolutely nothing
to do with it......I can't even figure out how to change the damn time
setting.....I guess I've been conditioned by Bill and will always have to use
Windows to get anything done or play any games.......
If you have any recommendations on how to solve these
problems, please drop me an e-mail or post here as I will continue to monitor
this forum for help.
