Wans't the original question about setting a desktop icon for KDE?

Firstly the folder you created is a sub directory of the root
filesystem, hence the /. (no, not slashdot, just slash =)

If you wanted the zip100 directory in your home dir then cd to your home
directory and 'mkdir zip100'. This will create /home/user/zip100
or
mkdir ~/zip100

Since you've alread created it you can just link to it:
ln -s /zip100 /home/user/zip100

Hmmmm, don't run Gnome so I'm not gonna be of much use here. However it
sounds like you're running Helix.

Try executing gmc at a prompt.

Sorry, can't help here either.
