dpkg --purge kdm
apt-get install kdm
or for hail install gdm ,looks better IMHO.
(choose here to install the package maintainer version if case some
files are beeing missed by purge).

No clue ,it worked for me in rain ,it still does in hail.

Usually it does after a reboot.Don't know why but it always worked after
a reboot.
